The Temperance Hall
At the heart of Bayside is Temperance Hall, built in 1882 by the Good Templars to serve as a community center and gathering place for Bayside’s social life. This year, the 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, Bayside Corners, Inc., began an ambitious project to repair and restore the building so that it can continue to be a useful community asset. The project will include beautification and drainage improvements to the property at the corner of Old Arcata and Jacoby Creek roads.
Over the years, this quirky Bayside community hall has served as a place for meetings, worship, potlucks, card games, lecture series, and many forms of dance instruction including ballet, square dancing and international folk dancing.

The Bayside Community Association deeded and owned the building and land to Bayside Corners in 2013. For 20 years it was used by the Mistwood Education Center four days a week during the school year.
Safety first
The safety of cyclists and pedestrians in Bayside is an ongoing concern as motorists continue to speed through this residential community.
There are several easy habits residents can pick up where there is the most traffic and speeding, especially Old Arcata Road and Jacoby Creek Road.
1. Clear the bike path in front of your house. Bring your empty trash cans back to your property as soon as possible.
Prune wild Himalayan blackberry vines away from the bike path. When the vines are overgrown, they scratch the young cyclists who go out into the street to avoid them.
Contact the Humboldt County Highways Department at (707) 445-7421 if berry vines have grown into the bike path along the road.

FRESHENED WALLS Painter John Mulvaney, whose work was sponsored by Susan McPherson and Kathleen Stanton.
2. If parked cars obstruct the bike path for cyclists, contact the Arcata Police Department if you are in town at (707) 822-2428; the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department if in the county at (707) 445-7251; or Jacoby Creek School if likely to be school related at (707) 822-4896.
At the start of each school year, parents of incoming students who are unfamiliar with Bayside’s traffic safety issues should be briefed and trained not to block bike lanes.
You can print a friendly notice to place under the car window wipers – “Please do not park on the cycle lane. The bike lane blockage forces cyclists out onto the street, creating dangerous conditions, especially for young, inexperienced cyclists.
