Lieu Representative Secures $ 2 Million for Affordable Housing in Santa Monica to Address Homelessness Under Credit Bill – santamonica.gov

Congressman Ted Lieu has ad that he managed to obtain inclusion of $ 2 million in funding in the House Appropriations Bill 2022 to support an affordable housing project on the current Site of parking structure 3 in downtown Santa Monica. I am pleased that these important local projects to address homelessness in our region have been included in the House’s supply bills for fiscal year 2022. If enacted into law, this funding will go directly to building housing and helping homeless people in our district. I will continue to advocate for our district in Congress to ensure we receive the federal funding we need to meet this ongoing challenge. “
Inclusion of this funding in the Appropriations Committee draft bills is the essential first step in ultimately securing significant federal support. which should be adopted by Congress later this autumn. The effort to convert parking structure 3 into affordable housing began in 2019 when city council authorized the city’s housing division to undertake a competitive selection process for the development of a 100% affordable housing project. on site, to include a significant component of supportive housing. This process was interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic and city staff now plan to present a recommendation to city council for the selection of the developer by the end of this year. At its meeting on March 23, 2021, Council designated this site as âexempt surplus landâ, thus reserving this site for the future development of a 100% affordable housing project, in accordance with recent amendments to the Law on surplus land (sections of the Code of 54200 et seq..). The demolition was approved by the Coastal Commission at its meeting on May 13, 2021. With Council approval on July 13, 2021 to go ahead with a demolition contract, this work is expected to begin in early 2022, after the holiday season.
