Island Housing Trust receives $100,000 donation

MOUNT DESERT ISLAND, Maine (WABI) – Island Housing Trust in Bar Harbor led a fundraising campaign to raise $3.5 million to build an affordable housing neighborhood on MDI.

The Coming Home Campaign received a big boost from Witham Family Hotels in the form of a $100,000 donation. He was later matched by an anonymous donor, helping Island Housing Trust achieve its campaign goal. Alongside the construction of the 10-home ‘Jones Marsh Neighbourhood’, the campaign will also increase funding for the Island Housing Trust’s Home Ownership Scheme.

A fund will also be created which will enable Island Housing Trust to purchase land or houses.

“It’s a local business,” said Marla O’Byrne, chief executive of the Island Housing Trust. “It’s well known, and we really need our local businesses to support us and recognize that this is a solution that will help them and the whole community to have year-round housing.”

“It would be nice to be able to accommodate more families on the island,” added Witham Family Hotels CEO David Witham. “So that people can live here, work here, have their children in school and a place to call home. “We view this relationship with Island Housing Trust as one that we seek to continue and support in the future.”
