(KAILUA-KONA, HAWAIʻI ISLAND) – A collaboration of 13 federal agencies, seven states, territories, U.S. commonwealths, and three freely associated states includes the U.S. Coral Reef Task Force (USCRTF). The members of the working group meet twice a year. The USCRTF was created in 1998 by executive order to lead U.S. efforts to preserve and protect coral reef ecosystems in all jurisdictions.

The Aquatic Resources Division (DAR) of the DLNR hosts the 45e USCRTF meeting in Kailua-Kona from August 27 to September 27. 3. Everyone is invited to attend an open business meeting of the working group on September 1, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Kaleiopapa Convention Center at the Outrigger Kona Resort & Spa.

During the one-day meeting, members of the working group and guest speakers will make presentations on topics related to coral reef conservation and management. This includes two special roundtables:

  • Protecting reefs and people in a new climate reality
  • Co-management and collaboration in Hawaiian Natural Resource Management

Both highlight priorities and accomplishments for the state and the Pacific region. Other presentation topics include stony coral tissue loss disease, international partnerships and programs, and special recognition of the Faga’alu watershed in American Samoa.

All attendees can register for a public comment session, currently scheduled for 2:00 p.m., to address key representatives from federal agencies and jurisdictions. Interested attendees can register for the commentary session outside the convention center from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

This event is free and will include opportunities for questions and discussion. Parking at the hotel is available for a daily rate of $25.
