City land use area undermined under SB35 – Santa Cruz Sentinel

Ross Gibson’s recent article did us a favor by providing a thoughtful story about the negative labeling of affected community members as “NIMBY”. Also the story of the developer funded YIMBY organization. We are working hard for truly affordable housing, not just lining the pockets of developers.

California law previously codified local control over land use so that each area could balance its varying needs and resources, recognizing that jurisdictions are different everywhere. With SB35, our city and others face a drastic assault on crucial land use jurisdiction for liveable and diverse communities.

No one can change the past, but as a society we always co-create the future with our current decisions. It is not just the community of Santa Cruz waiting to see what our city council decides at “this” moment in local history. Communities and local governments across the state are pushing back against new laws that undermine local control. Ross Gibson is right on target.
